Gwangju City introduced the 'Corporate Carbon Action' initiative on May 30th, marking the first such initiative in the country to encourage voluntary greenhouse gas reductions and enhance corporate capabilities.
Gwangju Mayor Kang gi-jung visited Arneg Korea Co., Ltd. on the afternoon of the 23rd, five months into the implementation of 'Corporate Carbon Action,' to hold a policy picnic and gather opinions from the field.
This policy picnic was organized to review the progress of the 'Corporate Carbon Action,' which was introduced in May by Gwangju City to promote voluntary greenhouse gas reductions among businesses, and to listen to any challenges they face.
The 'Corporate Carbon Action' initiative is a climate crisis response program that allows small and medium-sized enterprises, which are not subject to greenhouse gas reduction regulations, to manage their greenhouse gas emission targets and experience mock emissions trading to prepare for rapidly changing domestic and international market conditions. On May 30th, an agreement was signed with 12 local businesses and the Korea Energy Agency to implement 'Corporate Carbon Action.'
※ Emissions Trading System: A system that allows companies exceeding their greenhouse gas emissions limits to purchase emission allowances from companies with remaining allowances.
Arneg Korea (CEO Lee Sung-kyu) is a manufacturer of commercial refrigeration and freezing equipment located in the pyeongdong Industrial Complex. In July, the company received the Environmental Award at the '2024 Korea Industrial Awards.'
Mayor Kang visited the production process of the products and the energy diagnosis site supported by the Korea Energy Agency, encouraging the employees. He also held a meeting with stakeholders of the Corporate Carbon Action initiative to listen to the greenhouse gas reduction efforts of participating companies and the challenges they face in corporate management.
Meanwhile, Gwangju City is implementing the 'Support Project for Vulnerable Groups to Climate Change' to protect citizens from climate change while making efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This year alone, 84 reduction facilities, including cool roofs and heatwave shelters, have been installed (costing 940 million won). Additionally, a pilot project for the 'Cool City Creation Project,' which supports heat-resistant facilities, has been implemented in Mulgok 1-dong to prepare for heatwaves.
Mayor Kang Gi-jung stated, "The Corporate Carbon Action initiative, introduced for the first time in the country, is significant as it encourages local businesses to participate voluntarily in achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 and securing market competitiveness, making it a leading model." He added, "Gwangju City will continue to strengthen its support and cooperation."
The policy picnic was attended by about 30 participants, including Mayor Kang Gi-jung, representatives from participating companies in the Corporate Carbon Action initiative such as Arneg Korea Co., Ltd., Hwacheon Machinery Co., Ltd., Otech Carrier Co., Ltd., Green Tech Co., Ltd., Mudeung Enterprises Co., Ltd., and Hi Korea Co., Ltd., as well as representatives from the Korea Energy Agency and the Gwangju Climate and Energy Agency.
